Depression, Anxiety, Stress and other Mood Issues:

The most prevalent approach in the mental health field is to separate and categorize the ways clients' problems outwardly present into symptoms of various diagnoses. While this is necessary for insurance reimbursement purposes and to organized maintain standards of care, such categorization often does not provide the critical information needed to resolve the problems, which is why clients are seeking services in the first place.

In order to get to the causes, and not just treat symptoms which tend to only provide relief for the short-term, an effective psychotherapist needs to have an in-depth working knowledge of the laws of the nervous system, and how the nervous system develops and changes over the course of a lifetime
.

Through many years of experience in many different treatment settings, I have developed this knowledge as well as awareness that most often it is not just one isolated symptom or set of symptoms causing one's difficulties. Treatment methods should involve understanding how nature, or genetics and biologically based predispositions, interplays with nurture, or how experiences shapes one physiologically, psychologically, behaviorally and interpersonally.

When viewing clients and their challenges in such a way, I am able to see the interconnectedness of issues such as anxiety and depression, or chronic stress and anger, or bipolar disorder and substance abuse issues, or any combination of problems for which clients are seeking treatment. I recognize the potential genetic based deficiency in certain neurotransmitters, or the sensitivity of brain tissue of some disorders, or the spiking and crashing of the nervous system involved in two co-occurring conditions.

And, most importantly, I know what to do about it. I use the most up-to-date methods and approaches that blend advances from neuroscience with both Western and Eastern traditions, methods, and modalities.

Furthermore, I am aware when clients are in need of services and expertise beyond what I can provide, and I help link my clients with these services whenever necessary and agreed. I always educate clients on everything I recommend and do as this puts clients in a position of empowerment and control over their treatment.
