“Recognize others, be recognized, help others, be helped; such is a family relationship.” -Hawaiian Saying
Teens and Families:
Much of my experience has been focused on treating teens and families, and helping both make it through the challenges of the adolescent years.
Through a combination of individual and family counseling, I assist teens and parents to develop partnerships in relationships while recognizing and honoring healthy, adaptive, and necessary family roles and responsibilities.
In order to do this, it is critical for parents to understand what is normal and healthy in regards to adolescent development from a brain perspective, social and cultural perspective, and from the psychology of the teenager. Yet, there are certainly very real risks and dangers of the teenage years that need to be recognized, appreciated, and addressed, not just by parents, but also the teens.
My strategies incorporate a positive discipline approach that focuses on the teaching/learning dynamic between the parent and child, while also maintaining a balance between a close, open, and secure attachment and fostering responsible independence and individuality.
My work with teens includes not just those who are going through difficult adjustment periods during adolescents, but also those who struggle with depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, histories of trauma, substance abuse issues, behavioral problems, ADHD, Learning Disorders, or any combination of these.
